  • Almost one whole year, INJURY FREE!

So there I was, almost an ENTIRE YEAR from my last serious injury (see previous blog entry), catchin' some pretty big air off a set of jumps, when I decided I'd try to switch things up a little and test the high speed impact resistance of my FACE.

I guess that sounds pretty bad, but it really wasn't. Mainly just a sprained shoulder and a good solid concussion (that left me vomiting for a day and a half). This happened over three weeks ago, and my shoulder is still seriously messed up, but it was the whiplash that is really causing me problems. My back decided to go into spasms on wednesday and thursday, to the point where I couldn't get out of bed without a fury of pain ripping up and down my entire spine.

The good news is that the doctor thinks my body is "salvageable", which is a lot more optimistic than anyone else I have ever met in my entire life. So I've been taking robaxacet (for back pain) and it's been working wonders. I'm also now scheduled for some physio and massage therapy. I'm working out of town for three weeks now too, which means I won't be riding for three weeks, which means that there actually is a chance I might show some improvement!

Also, since I've been riding a lot more, I'm getting a lot better. So I wonder now, does this mean that the number of injuries I sustain will decrease? It's a tough call, because although my skills are improving, I'm also taking more and more risks. We should start an injury pool to bet when I'll break myself next!

I'd also be willing to throw the fight for the right price.

  • So there I was, ripping down the Della Creek trail in Lillooet...

"Undisplaced" = awesome, because I didn't need any pins. Apparently I'm really lucky.
And I saw the xray.... the break spirals all the way from the base of my finger to my wrist... plus the other couple breaks which resulted in the 4 separate pieces of bone that I now have where I should only have one.

    So it goes...

  • so the other day I electrocuted myself at work... 400 volts...
I was REALLY lucky that the majority of the current travelled through my hand to wrist, and not across my chest...
still knocked me back and had me walking around in circles all disoriented. not to mention the numbness all over the left side of my face, and the gimpy eye.

  • It's been a while since I last updated this thing, and I'm not even sure that anyone reads this anymore, but I still like keeping track of all the wonderful things that happen to me. This blog is a chronicle of all of these things, and I will now continue to add to the magic.

Hmmmm... where do I start... ah yes...

So it all started in October sometime.... I finally decided to go back to Karate after being away from it for a few years... I was doing great, getting stronger, and my technique was improving very quickly.. I had even made the realistic goal of training for my second degree black belt which I would have graded for this May...
BUT... during one of my classes, I was sparring with my Sempei when he roundhouse kicked me and I, for reasons I will never understand, decided to block it with finger. hhaha
The kick ended up dislocating my right ring finger at the middle knuckle and pushing the lower half of it all the way up over top of the upper half of my finger, so my finger nail was resting right over top of the middle knuckle... my finger was essentially stacked on top of itself.

So after realizing what had happened, and kind of going into a bit of shock, my sempei tried pulling it out for me and putting it back in place. I grabbed my belt and clenched down on it with my teeth to help take the pain, but he couldn't get a good enough grip to pull it all the way out... so we went to the emergency.

There isn't a whole lot more to that story - the doctor stabbed the joint with a needled, pulled out the finger, and sent me on my way... but I couldnt return back to karate for a few weeks out of fear of hitting the finger while sparring...

So again I was to miss out on karate for a while...

So after a busy December with moving and christmas and stuff, I finally went back to karate in January. No problems for the first week, but when the second week came around, we were doing some bag work, and I was repeatedly roundhouse kicking a bag.... over and over and over again... perhaps 50 times per leg, maybe a hundred.... This all felt great while i was doing it, and the rest of that training session was awesome.. but later that evening I started to feel a bit of pain in my hips... and byt he next day, the pain was so unbearable that I could barely walk...

As it turned out, I ended up getting Bursitis in my hips... the doctor was absolutely amazed by how much I've put my body through...

So I was out from karate again... I could barely walk for a couple weeks, and the pain kept getting worse for a bout a week before it finally started to get a bit better... So by the time I was almost good to go again, I started getting sick... really bad cramps in my stomach...  sO I couldnt quite go back to karate yet...

So after about a week of bad cramps (which were related to my surgery last year), my stomach finally settled down and I was somewhat good to go again... so one weekend I decided to go biking with my buddy Jason...  It was all good for the most part, we took it pretty easy. Even did some dirt jumps, and I was dong just fine. My balance was all good, almost as if I hadn't been away from riding for a whole year. But half way down one of the trails, while just cruising over a rocky section, the tendon in my ankle popped out again, making a really loud snapping sound. This of course hurt like a bitch, and caused me to ditch my bike and bail... After the pain subsided, I managed to get back on the bike so I could slowly keep riding down the mountain... but the tendon popped out again three more times before getting back to the truck... each time was a little less painful, but still really bad...

So that week I went to see my surgeon and we decided to book another surgery to fix things up, tentatively scheduled for mid april...

But by thursday evening of that week, I started to get pains in my stomach again... except this time it was really really bad...

So by 7 am friday morning, I was in the emergency room a St. Paul's hospital... pumped full of morphine, reminiscing about my two week long stay there almost exactly 13 months before...

so after about 12 hours in emergency, and after speaking to a team of surgeons, I was admitted to abdominal ward in the Providence tower, awaiting surgery on my intestines...

So saturday evening came and went, and I woke up sunday morning with 34 new staples down the middle of my stomach... a new record number!!

So after a little over a week in the hospital, I was just released and am now relaxing and recovering in chilliwack...
My stomach surgeon has advised that I post pone the ankle surgery for at least 3 months, which I am definitely okay with...

I'm actually getting sick of the hospital... the novelty of being drugged up on morphine and all these wonderful drugs is finally wearing off, and I now actually hope that I never end up in there again...

Luckily, this time it wasn't life threatening like it was last year, but it was still pretty bad... there was even a point a couple days after the surgery that I was in really bad shape with a terrible sinus condition that could have progressed to something a lot worse... I was in so much pain, I wanted it all to just be over... for good.

But I'm doing alright now... slowly recovering, still experiencing some pretty intense pain, but it comes and goes in waves, and its somewhat predictable so I can take my pain killers in advance.

Honestly though, this year is looking up... despite all this, I actually feel healthier than I have in years... partly because I havent been drinking for a long time now, and also because I've actually been working out a lot and eating right.

I wonder what's in store for me next!

  • So I went to this really sweet mexican fiesta party last night.
    It was really really fun.

Then I lost my cell phone...

... and tipped over a statue... which broke....

Now the owner of the statue is suing me for $3500.

    ... so it goes...

EDIT:  I forgot to mention that when I woke up, the shorts I was wearing were covered in blood, my wrist watch was smashed up and covered in blood, and my left ear was scraped and cut up.
